The biggest United Methodist picnic in the
denomination’s 200-year history
in Wayne County is planned for
July 7, 2012.

Didn’t know this?   Actually that’s just one item on a year-long calendar of events being planned by Oak Chapel United Methodist Church of Wooster that it hopes will bring together members of all 22 United Methodist congregations in Wayne County to celebrate their unique heritage.

Spearheading the development of all the special events has been a special committee led by Oak Chapel’s pastor, the Rev. Robin D. Dillon, as well as Georgia Taylor and Elizabeth Feldman.

Feldman said that after getting off to a slow start, a meeting held at the church on Jan. 31 attracted attendance by a half-dozen area United Methodist churches, including those in Wooster, Dalton, Apple Creek, West Salem and Smithville. The upshot of the meeting, Feldman said, was an obvious growing sense of excitement about how the churches could pool their resources to pull off the ambitious slate of activities.

The picnic is planned to get under way on Saturday, July 7th, at 4 pm with former United Methodist pastors from the area bringing greetings. Pastor Dillon said there will be no formal speeches or sermons, just an opportunity for United Methodists to celebrate the cohesiveness of the church. This will be followed by an afternoon of fellowship and old fashioned family games such as three-legged races, checkers, corn hole, sack races and other events that can been enjoyed by everyone. We hope to offer live music during the afternoon and evening. Check here later for more on this.

At 5 p.m. we'll have a huge carry-in supper, with the Oak Chapel congregation additionally providing hot dogs. This picnic is to celebrate our 200th anniversary, "We’ve lasted 200 years, we’re still together and still going strong. We’ve been at this two centuries here and we’re still doing well and thriving.”

Pastor Dillon hopes to use the church’s 200th birthday to renew the faith of its members, attract members of other United Methodist congregations to the church, and perhaps bring new members into the faith.
